You Tore the Picture

by The Empty Mirrors

/

about

In a parallel/fictional universe, Syd Barrett came out of his seclusion in the late 70s just as punk was petering out, and carved a unique place in the British post-punk scene, fitting in perfectly alongside the likes of Siouxsie and the Banshees and the Cure, and imbuing the music of the day with his uniquely playful and psychedelic sensibility.

Three groundbreaking albums, one disastrous tour that made 'This is Spinal Tap' look like a sober and factual documentary, and one surprisingly commercial single and it was all over, bar a slew of cover versions by wannabe copyists that continue to this day.

Maybe his stuff from that period would've sounded a bit like this?

lyrics

You Tore the Picture

You drew the sun into my sky. You drew the trees, and birds flying by
You drew a house with a front door. You drew the windows, chimney and more
You drew a garden, flowers and lawn. You drew us sitting on a see-saw

Maybe I still love you. Maybe I care
Maybe now I hate you. Wither in despair

You showed me moonstone in the wild wood. I ate the apple, you said I could
I smiled at you, you looked away. On the horizon the sky turned to grey

Maybe I still love you. Maybe I care
Maybe now I hate you. Wither in despair

You brought the sunshine. You took it away
You tore the picture. Set it aflame

You tore the picture

You drew the sun into my sky. You drew the trees, and birds flying by
You drew a house with a front door. You drew the windows, chimney and more
You brought the sunshine. You took it away
You tore the picture. Set it aflame
